We've made it! We're finally here: the episode everyone was talking about in the cafeteria the next day at school... Pacey and Joey finally kiss! And then audiences in 2000 had to wait a month before they found out what happened next!
Also, we say goodbye to AJ (much to Charles' delight) and hello to Buzz Thompson. And Leery's Fresh Fish is almost open for business!

Just listened and I love Charles' disdain for AJ! It made me laugh out loud. I was only seven when I saw this episode in 2000 (why I was allowed to watch this at 7, I'll never know but I had a tv in my room I guess is why???) anyway, I did not remember the original song at the end because when I saw that episode again, I think I was 12 so all I remember is that corny acoustic song that plays at the end of the episode now and it's always irritated me. It spoils the mood a little bit because, I mean not to be harsh, but her singing is not my cup of rum. I always envision an elf with pointy ears and tiny teeth is just sitting under a tree from afar with a little acoustic guitar and singing while watching Pacey and Joey kiss and it just takes me out of the moment. Now that I admit that out loud, I'm a bit worried about myself lmao but I noticed a lot as the show progresses that the songs chosen to replace the original songs suck and in many instances just simply bad and like that silly "Thank God for the teachers of our children so the flowers can grow" song that makes my ears bleed every time that it too spoils my "You bought me a wall" scene but I've taken a mean girl turn in this message so I will just say that I'm excited that we are now 2 weeks away from my favorite episode of Dawson's Creek... the one episode that I get giddy for any new Dawson's Creek watcher to see so I'm looking forward to hearing that episode as well as next week's. Congrats on the website! Happy Memorial Day! Is "Happy" Memorial Day even appropriate? See ya next week.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting you mention the original music! I never watched this when it aired, only on DVD/streaming services. I don't know how much of the original music they used on the DVDs (where I first watched them like ten years ago, but I recognize that garden teachers song haha and I think I saw Cinderella Story with the original music and that sounded weird bc it wasn't the song I know) but the music that's playing on streaming is all I know. I didn't even know they changed the music from what they played when it aired, but now I'm curious as to what songs were actually playing in some of my favorite scenes! Sorry, this is me rambling, cannot WAIT to listen to the episode ASAP!
Delete*Saw Cinderella Story as in saw a clip of it on YouTube with the original song.
DeleteThe way Jen is being so honest with and supportive of Dawson reminded me of something. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Eve turned out to be Jen's sister and Dawson is the only one who knows this and never tells Jen. Dawson is always so morally high and mighty about lying by omission. So how come the (unbearable) Eve story played out this way??
ReplyDeleteThe writers decided to drop that storyline so they never confirmed Eve was Jen's sister so they just tried to forget about it and swept it under the rug lol The problem was there was someone else (I forget his name right now) that was in charge that made a mess of things and the cast was not happy with what that dude was doing so then the wonderful Greg Berlanti took over the rest of s3 and that Eve stuff was scrapped. Hope that made sense. I typed that all out quickly so I can get back to work lmao
DeleteMakes sense. I'm just as happy to forget the whole Eve arc as well, to be honest.
DeleteWas the person they got rid of the one who put Pacey and Jen together and the cast memebefs hated that? If so, thank god - I wasn’t a fan of Eve or Pacey/Jen romantically.
DeleteYep lol I forget the person's name but I think he was working on s2 as well. KW had too much on his plate in s2 before he left and there was another guy also steering the ship, so to speak. I just know that the cast was not all too happy in s2 and the beginning of s3. The show was in danger of being dropped and that's when they chose to replace the other dude with Greg Berlanti as showrunner and he scrapped the Eve b.s. and started focusing on building "the triangle" to change the direction of the show. I think Greg also scrapped the whole football/cheerleading stuff too because that was the shortest high school football season known to humanity lol
DeleteI wrote essentially this to the Dawson’s speak twitter haha but:
ReplyDeleteI don’t think Joey realized her feelings for Pacey prior to the kiss.
I def think there were moments where she realized that there was something there; but I think to Joey, that was more platonic feelings at first (and if they hadn’t been so obvious with Pacey I would have thought they were platonic too). I think it was the kiss (and SPOILER ALART CHARLES def the episodes after) to make her see she loved him.
I wish we could have gotten a buildup to her feelings like we did Pacey. Looking back it’s easy to think that she developed feelings early, but again, I think those were more platonic at first.
I love the third season for Pacey and Joey, can’t wait for you lovely people to cover these next several episodes! :D
Spoiler alert Charles for the next episode can you guys bring up the season one kiss again because When pacey kissed her she immediately pulled away but in neverland she didn't and pacey calls her out on it i just thought it was a interesting parallel
ReplyDeleteThat's something that kind of drives me nuts. Dawson i.e. the writers always forget that Pacey was interested in Joey first. He wasn't in love or anything but he did want to kiss her and potentially have something become of that but she wasn't attracted to him at that time. Just bugs me how some people act like Pacey's feelings for Joey came out of nowhere or how some Dawson fans think Pacey is horrible for "stealing" Joey away from his best friend. Dawson knew Pacey had shown interest in Joey after spending the day with her so was it really all that shocking that Pacey fell in love with her while they had become very close friends? The writers sometimes smh I don't want to even get started on that whole belief system that a person is capable of stealing anybody away from somebody else in the romantic sense. Argh! lol Sorry I digress. True though, completely different reaction after both kisses.
DeleteThis podcast is so much nostalgia for me! I remember the night this episode aired - I had to go to church on Wednesday nights, so I taped it via VCR and watched it when I got home while I did my math homework (I was a freshman in high school). It was such a big deal! I had watched most of season 1 and some of season 2, but when I started hearing buzz about a potential Pacey/Joey romance, it caught my full interest again. And then after this cliffhanger, we had to wait so long for the next episode and I remember being so pumped when it finally came back on, and I taped all the rest of the season and was so pro-Pacey/Joey! LOL. I love listening to all of your recaps. This show was such a big part of my adolescence. And I still love Pacey <3
ReplyDeleteSo I’m a little behind on listening to this podcast and trying to catch up fast! Anyways one of the things I laughed out loud about was your commentary on how Joey knew Doug’s number. I still to this day remember all my friends home numbers. It was just something we had to do back before cellphones.
ReplyDeleteAlso I’m one of those people that still remembers current songs during certain moments especially with Pacey and Joey. It is frustrating to hear a different song when you know the other one so vividly! I was an avid watcher and taped every episode when it aired and also rewatched episodes via VCR all summer long! When it started playing on TBS I even would sit and tape no commercials!
Another talk you guys point out is how everyone probably talked about this the next day during school... that is a YES! First period was PE basketball for me where I would recap the episode to my friend who couldn’t watch cause her parents didn’t allow her to.. she would borrow my tape and on Saturday nights after her parents went to bed she would sneak downstairs to watch the current episode and return the tape to me Monday so I could tape the next episode for me and her. Also my best friends knew not to call me during Dawson’s Creek time on Tuesday/Wednesday nights! I would not be answering that phone that’s for sure!
Keep up the good work.. love your podcast!
Okay, so I'm over a year behind on this show (and trying to catch up before the finale!) Like AngeYee, I recorded all my favorite Joey/Pacey episodes when the show ran on TBS (4 episodes every day, all summer long!) and watched the tape so many times that the original music plays in my head over all of the replacement songs. The biggest music change for me (in season 3, at least) is during Weekend in the Country. They play a jazzy rendition of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now during the finale montage, and it's just so perfect, and sets a really different tone from the Seasons of Us song. ReplyDeleteOnto this episode. I think that to Joey, she sees herself in Morgan and AJ as Dawson, but I agree with the IMDB poster, that Morgan also fills a Pacey role to AJ's Joey. She specifically says that Morgan challenges AJ and forces him to be a better version of himself, in very similar language to how she described Pacey in Too Green, With Love, and then in the car has a hard time verbalizing her relationship with Pacey because it's "love unspoken." So while I don't think Joey made the connection at all, and solely was thinking about her relationship with Dawson, I think we the viewer were supposed to see a similarity between Morgan/AJ and Pacey/Joey on top of the obvious comparisons to Joey/Dawson (hello Paris!)
